Pool Chemistry Tips

I am still amazed at how every single time I take on a new account the chlorine and stabilizer levels are always out of whack. For some reason pool service companies and pool guys have no issue keeping pH and alkalinity levels in the good range but can't seem to figure out the difference between chlorine and free chlorine. Let me explain.... There are 3 types of chlorine on the market, liquid, tablet and granular. Typically I control my pools with a mixture of liquid and tablet and only use granular for staining issues and algae problems. Now there is also something we call stabilizer that needs to be present at a specified level to help hold the chlorine in the water and keep it from evaporating out super fast. Well when you use tablets you may have noticed that most buckets of tablet chlorine say "stabilized" that means it has stabilizer built in, Great, right? Well if used properly yes this is fine but if you are using tablets as your main source of disinfecting chlorine this is bad. If your stabilizer level goes to high it actually traps the chlorine in the water and makes it ineffective and no longer free. So a quick chemical analysis will show Chlorine at the correct level but if you do a few more tests on the water you will notice that your "free" chlorine level may be close to zero!!! This time of year I'm getting a few algae and spotting issue phone calls. I head over to the house and do a chemical analysis and low and behold the stabilizer is through the roof and free chlorine is non existant!! This drives me crazy. Another way pool companies are getting one over on you. Tablets are also alot less expensive than liquid chlorine and thus used by many as the main source of sanatization. Not for this guy. If your noticing browning or yellowing of your fittings and surface this is another tale tale sign of to much stabilizer. Please call me and let me check your water so you can avoid unneeded algae and phosphate treatments. Not all phosphates can be controlled by proper chlorine use but most can and by all means algae can. Why spend the extra money on these treatments when they should have never happened in the first place. Just a basic understanding of pool chemistry and these costly issues can be completely avoided. You cannot afford your cheap pool service if you have these issues. Not only will algae attack you will also run into premature equipment failure, and added stress on filters as well as discoloring of clothing and your pool surface and all fittings also weakening them. Don't let the splash and dash pool service cost you thousands of dollars.
